„Towards local uniformization of non-archimedean surfaces“
Prof. Dr. Michael Temkin, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem

The only known proof of resolution of singularities of threefolds is by first establishing a local resolution (usually called local uniformization) along a valuation, and then globalizing. Semitable reduction of surfaces is still a conjecture (expected to be of a comparable level of difficulty or slightly easier), and it can be attacked similarly by first solving a local question on a non-archimedean (e.g. Berkovich) space. In my talk I'll explain how local uniformization of curves is proved (this is already a difficult theorem) and then will talk about a program to establish the case of surfaces.
