We give an introduction and overview about the different functorial theories of characteristic classes of singular complex algebraic varieties. These are the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch class of Brasselet-Schürmann-Yokura (depending on a parameter y), which unify the Chern class of MacPherson (for y=-1), the Todd class of Baum-Fulton-MacPherson (for y=0) and the L-class of Cappell-Shaneson (for y=1).
