Mathematisches Kolloquium

The fundamental group was born in 1895 in the hands of Henri Poincaré, as an object belonging to Analysis Situs, a new branch of mathematics later named Algebraic Topology. It was imported in Algebraic Geometry by Grothendieck in the late 1950's. Its most modern incarnations, introduced after 1982 by Nori and others, also have something to say about the differential and arithmetic aspects of algebraic varieties of positive characteristic p>0. We will review this story by drawing pictures like people did until 1950, and drawing arrows like people did after 1950.
