I will first review Goldman’s construction of a complex-symplectic structure on the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-character variety of a surface. Then I will explain how this can be used to study the deformation space of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds. As an application, I will discuss various rigidity questions for cone-manifolds and polyhedra. This is mostly joint work with Grégoire Montcouquiol.
