There are several ways to "lift" classical modular forms to automorphic forms on higher rank groups. We will discuss several such liftings in the context of the symplectic and unitary group. The Petersson norm of such a lift conjecturally controls congruences between the lift and automorphic forms which do not arise in such a way. We will discuss some new results in this direction and their applications to the Bloch-Kato Conjecture and the Main Conjecture of Iwasawa Theory. Part of this is a joint work with Jim Brown.
