A C*-algebra is an algebra of operators on a Hilbert space which is closed for the operator norm and invariant under the operation of taking the adjoint of an operator. One important element for the understanding of such an algebra is given by topological invariants which are analogous to and generalize the cohomology groups of a locally compact space. We discuss some examples that arise from actions of groups or semigroups. Some of these examples are related to concepts from elementary number theory.
