„The Standard Model from String Theory: a Challenge in Physics and Mathematics“
Gemeinsames Kolloquium mit der Physik
Prof. Andre Lukas, Oxford University

The talk will be discussing the attempts to relate string theory to realistic particle physics, particularly in the context of the heterotic string. String theory, formulated in 10 dimensions, requires compactification of six of its dimensions in order to relate to observable physics. This relationship intertwines the physics of string theory with the mathematics of six-dimensional manifolds, particularly Calabi-Yau three-folds. Methods of algebraic geometry and commutative algebra become directly relevant as tools to extract the physics of string models. I will outline this interplay between physics and mathematics and review recent progress which has led to the construction of a large number of quasi-realistic models from string theory.
