(joint work with Ulrich Bunke) I will describe a new approach to understand the K-theory of arithmetic varieties over the ring of integers Z. It is based on a differential extension of the generalised cohomology theory represented by the K-theory spectrum. More precisely, this differential extension combines information about K-theory classes with differential form data describing the image of these classes under Beilinson's regulator map. It may also be seen as an alternative version of higher arithmetic K-theory. I will also discuss applications of this theory.
