In this survey talk, I will give an overview of how structures from Iwasawa theory enter chromatic homotopy theory. After a general introduction to the chromatic filtration of the stable homotopy category, we will focus on the first interesting layer, the so called K(1)-local category. The corresponding algebra is governed by the Iwasawa algebra $\Lambda$, so that the K(1)-local category can be approximated by modules over $\Lambda$. We will then explain work due to Bousfield and Hahn--Mitchell, lifting classification results for Iwasawa modules to stable homotopy theory. If time permits, I will also outline some speculations about generalizations and applications of these results.
