Symplectic manifolds arise as phase space in classical mechanics, and coisotropic submanifolds as level sets for an autonomous Hamiltonian. We fix such a level set and denote by φ the time-one flow for a time-dependent perturbation of the Hamiltonian. A leafwise fixed point of φ is a point on the level set whose trajectory is changed only by a phase shift, under the perturbation. I will discuss a lower bound on the number of leafwise fixed points of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism. As an application the sphere is not symplectically squeezable. This improves a nonsqueezing result by M. Gromov.
