A C*-algebra is an involutive algebra which is isomorphic to a closed and *-closed algebra of operators on a Hilbert space. The K-theory for C*-algebras generalizes the topological K-theory introduced by Atiyah-Hirzebruch and has close commections to index theory (in the sense of Atyah-Singer) as well as applications in different fields such as for instance the classification of differentiable manifolds. In this series of lectures I will try to give an introduction for non-experts to the basics of the theory of C*-algebras (first lecture) and of their topological K-theory (second lecture). In the third lecture I plan to discuss recent examples of C*-algebras arising naturally from structures in algebraic number theory. The description of their K-theory is related to number theoretic concepts.
