„Surface subgroups of closed hyperbolic three manifolds “
Nicolaus Treib, LMU München

Abstract: We will discuss the surface subgroup conjecture which states that the fundamental group of any closed hyperbolic three manifold contains a surface subgroup. Its proof by Kahn and Markovic consists of three main steps: First of all, the construction of almost symmetric pairs of pants using the frame flow. Secondly, the assembly of an immersed surface. The mixing property of the frame flow allows for a great degree of freedom in this step. Finally one shows that, assuming certain bounds on the complex Fenchel-Nielsen-coordinates, a surface group representation into PSL(2;C) is faithful. We will outline the arguments of Kahn and Markovic for the first two steps and provide an alternative approach to the last.
