The problem of universal norms naturally appears in Iwasawa theory, notably to establish "control theorems" for Selmer groups. It was first studied by Mazur in his fundational work on Iwasawa theory for abelian varieties. In 1996, Coates and Greenberg solved the problem for abelian varieties, but it remains open for general motives. I will explain how to use properties of the Fargues-Fontaine curve to study this problem and solve it in many new cases.
