Let M be a Hilbert scheme of points on a surface X. The class of tautological bundles on M is essentially the class we can directly study in terms of objects on X. Deciding the stability of a tautological object faces the problem that also non-tautological sub sheaves may appear. We present a new approach which circumvents this problem.
