We will review how two-dimensional local fields arise from an arithmetic surface and we will discuss how the higher topology gives the structure of a locally convex vector space. An account of the structure of these spaces from the point of view of nonarchimedean functional analysis will follow; we will also discuss what new phenomena appear, interactions with the ind/pro approach and new approaches to the theory of higher local fields.
